Check brushes for good contact. Yes your guess for bad diode(s) can be another cause, but I would say these do not seem to cause a flickering ignition light. So check for bad contacts and almost brok

Steve et al, I had a problem with this once and I did two things that corrected it, I'm not sure which one was causing it but they were: tightened the belt, replaced a leaky/noisy water pump. I know
