Hi Listers, I finally got the tank out of my '80 Spit and have a radiator shop that will flush it out for me. The next question... Do I need to pull out the sending unit or is it safe to leave in? Ce

I'd definitely remove the sender unit from the tank before leaving it with the radiator guys. Someone will have to remove it -- you don't want it soaked in the hot tank. Best if that is you. I had m

Bruce; You need to remove it definately one way or another as the solution that is used to clean radiators is very caustic and will destroy the gaskets and seals for that part of the tank anyways. Th

Thank you all, I finally got the sending unit out tonight. Tried to get a brass "drift" (is this the same as a pin punch?) at Sears since someone raised the sparks-around-gas issue. No dice, no time

Yes. <snip> Sorry, no idea about that orange washer. Perhaps it fell down from the top area of the tank? But wait, there are supposed to be TWO wires to the sending unit -- a green and a black. If th

When I said "wire" I meant to describe the thin metal rod which mechanically connects the plastic float to what I would guess is a rheostat wiper in the sending unit. Possibly the "orange" is from r

Guys, I think that orange "washer" may actually be more of an o-ring that was placed around the center of the float itself and acted like a bump stop for the float when the fuel level gets low. At le

There was also a 2nd smaller (1 1/2" dia.) washer orange-ish ** Yep, that washer goes around the float itself, and acts as a cushion to prevent the float from banging the tank in it's full and empty

Could that possibly be the rubber "washer" that fits around the plastic float? I found mine when I dumped the remaining gas out of my tank. Reid '79 Spitfire Atwell, When I said "wire" I meant to des

That loose second smaller washer fits 'round the float to keep it from banging on the top or bottom of the tank. Mine was lying in the bottom of the tank. (I used a stump of hardwood dowel to tap the

Ohhhh....Gotcha. A rusty actuator rod is indeed a possibility. Per a thread here a month ago, we determined that the OEM senders had a 'rubber band' type oring around the float to keep it quiet if it
