John--On my '73 the trunk light comes on any time the lid is raised. It shoud not be necessary to have the dash lights on. DT

FWIW, my lower steering shaft has a groove all the way around. It's a '74 TR6. I just replaced my rack and the pinch bolt was removed to slide the shaft out of the universal. I was also able to rece
