I just took my 70 MGB on its maiden drive after a complete rebuild. The front brakes are not releasing completely and get very hot after 10 blocks or so. Is there a check valve in the master cylinder

Hello Dave. No, check valve. The front rubber brake line may be blocked and not letting the brake fluid return to master cylinder. Or when you pushed the caliper pistons back into caliper. You didn't

I'm presuming all your B's had wire wheels.... ... because the clunk is normally either worn splines and/or insufficient tightening of the knock-on Mike
