That's the way I understood it too. I remember (in a former life, I'm can't be that old) that service stations sold regular and Ethyl gasoline. Ethyl had tetraethyl lead added for higher performance

It's not that your valves would get "burnt", which, as I understand it, refers mainly to exhaust valves, which must withstand very high temperatures. It's valve seat recession which is the "problem"
