Other faults not withstanding, the voltage "stabilisers" on my 73 and 75 are adjusatble, there is a small threaded rod with a flat end sticking out of the insulated base, beside one of the connectors

I have owned 3 mgb's, and the fuel guage worked the same way on all of them. Half full meant 8 gallons were gone, four were left. And the guage never reached empty except when the car was turned off.
