I bought a solid state replacement OEM appearing fuel pump from Doug Jennings years ago that was trouble-free and had the added benefit of bolting right in with NO butchery of the original fittings--

I just picked up a solid state purolator pump from Kragen. It's much smaller. It does't shut off at pressure but it also doesn't supply too much pressure like the old pump. It's also pretty quiet. Ha
