I have pulled several MGB gas tanks and about half were rusted on top between trunk floor and tank top.It is not very hard to pull the tank but it can be pain putting it back by yourself. Philip Sch

I don't know if this will help, but before I put my replacement tank (to deal with the rust holes etc.) in, I put several coats of black rustoleum all over the top, especially around the filler pipe

If your leaks are small try "inflating" it gently with an air compressor. If you decide you need to weld your tank, fill it with water while doing so. That will expel all of the gas fumes. Andrew Lun
