I checked the fluid levels in the gearbox and they're fine. Turns out I'm using 80/90 weight, hypoid, which I hope is okay. Maybe not. The electrics all work fine and the solenoid reacts instantly w

99% certain you will need to remove the cover. But at least you don't have to remove the transmission (yet). Firsts check the solenoid lever adjustment (that screw and locknut opposite the solenoid).

I do remember that at some point in the past people have advised against using 'hypoid' gear oil - something about it being too slippery, which prevents the O/D from engaging? I also seem to remembe

Hi Jeff, I'm not saying you should use this on your O/D but the one I bought rebuilt from Quantum Mechanics recommends putting straight 30W non-detergent oil in the O/D tranny. He feels the 80/90 wei

After a lengthy discussion with the guy who rebuilt my transmission and probably knows more about geaboxes, overdrives and diffs than anyone I've ever met on the planet, he suggested that I try spli

It's amazing the diversifications of opinions, btdt's, spec sheet conflicts, etc etc ...as an example, the D type O/D is the same on the MG as the early (read same model years) and the Triumphs. MG s

Speaking of diverse opinions, my transmission guru scoffed at the notion of gear lubricant additives damaging parts they are created to protect. If anything, he seems to subscribe to the notion that

Yes, the oils have gotten better and so have the parts they are designed to protect. Unfortunately the brass synchro rings in our cars are vintage 1960's and are damaged by sulfur additives in gear

Thanks Joe, I'll take your word for it and I'm glad to hear that the oil I put in there contains no sulfer. Better safe than sorry. But how does one tell of oil contains sulfer or other friction redu

The best way to know if the oil has sulfur in it is to read the label. I think that all GL-5 types of gear oil has Alkyl Sulfide and I don't think that GL-4 oils do. Synthetic oils will be too slick

Well Joe, the good news is that your camber compensator got a good workout this afternoon, even with stock bushings and shocks. I threw my car around my favorite curvy two-lane and it handled better

Straight 50 weight motor oil is pretty darned thick. Normally I see recommendations for 30 weight. I'm personally running a 10-30 in my J type. As Joe mentioned, some gold colored metals degrade fast

Don't forget that the weight numbering system for gear oil is not equivalent to that of motor oil. I.e., a 40-weight motor oil is not at all half as viscous as a 80-weight gear oil at the same temper
