AFAIK, all MGBs speedo are mechanically driven rather than the electronic ones on today's cars. As you said the mile counter works correctly the problems lies in two places. I'd first try cleaning an

If your system is like the ones I have worked on, the Speedo and Odo operate off separate systems after the cable input. The speedo works off a magnetic coupling, but the odo operates off a "picker"

Palo Alto speedometer is great at repairing and calibrating Smiths instruments including MGB speedos. Just had them repair and re-calibrate mine for new wheel/tire set up. They did a fantastic job. T

There's another possible cause for optimistic reading and then jerking around. The cable, mechanical tach or mechanical speedo, turns a cup inside of which is a magnet that's attached to the needle.
