I also found out that the later TR7 5 speed LT77 box works best with ATF: using engine oil or gear oil slows the shifts down and causes grunching. Steve Hedke British Pacific Ltd.

We received a recommendation from a Lapenis specialist to use non detergent 40w oil in the J-type. (30w nondet in cold weather). Anybody doing this?

The oil in an overdrive box is doing a huge amount of work when the ovedrive is engaged, experience suggests a J type will outlast a gearbox or two if normal gearbox oil is used as recommended by Tri

With this recent discussion of gear oil and shock oils, it is important to point out that (if I'm not mistaken) there are completely different standards for reporting gear oil and engine oil weights.
