I'm not sure what a definitive test would be. However, the classic symptom of a failed seal is that the brake pedal sinks slowly to the floor under light to moderate pressure. It may or may not sink

Jay, the hydraulic problems might indicate that the wrong brake fluid was used in the car. Do you know its history? If you are new to MGs, you should know that the ONLY correct fluid to use is DOT 4

Thanks for the advice...now, for a response. OUCH! The Haynes manual says SAE J1703, so I bought DOT 3, because the bottle said, "DOT 3, FED. STD. 116, SAE J1703". Is the Haynes manual wrong on this?
