It is strange how senility gets to even the old! I have been reminded that giving the cars type would help and I apologies for the omission. I need the brake handle and thing to go into a 1970 MGB GT

When the shoes are correctly set - just rubbing but not binding, tested by operating the foot and handbrakes a couple of times then tapping the drum with a mallet - the handbrake travel is set by the

Got new rear brake pads, new hand brake cable, put on by a professional mech and still no handbrake holding power on my hill. Readjusted and still no holding power. Any suggestions? The mech said he

Is he adjusting the rear brakes (at the wheel) or the hand brake cable adjuster (underneath, in the tunnel)? He's right not to let the rear shoes drag, but they need to be darn close to it, then the

While looking at the cable adjuster you also can inspect the cable quality. My cable operated well, but when looking near the adjuster it showed it almost was broken. Cheers, Hans '71 BGT with a new

Hi Hans, That's where the part of the instructions on alignint the cable come in. There's a part about alignment for minimum flex at the adjuster end. CR

I have found the biggest problems to be on the linkage mounted to the axle where the cable splits off to both wheels. IMO the better that works the better the system works James Nazarian '71 B roadst

Check all the linkages are free and that the shoes (!) can be moved easily when pulling on the lever that sticks out of the back of the brake-drums by hand. Also check orientation of the shoes, the m

It will hold on a moderate hill, but not on a good size hill. I have to ratchet it all the way up to get that. The shoes and cable are brand new. I think the rear shoes need to be adjusted up some mo

Where it catches depends entirely on you! You adjust the relative positionof the handbrake lever with the brass nut that is on the end of the cable, under the floor. Too tight, it'll catch after ver

By my reckoning, having to pull it up a bit more on a steeper hill is normal. If you can pull it up, and it holds, sounds good to me! Handbrake efficiency is reduced if the cable is pulling on the ba

The only problem is I have to pull it up to my armpit to get it to lock. I think it just needs more adjustment at the shoes, I hope. THANKS! Mike R contributes pull it up hence spring.
