They used to make a two piece hard top for the TR-4 and TR-250 that looked like it could be used like a targa top. I don't remember what it was called but you may want to find a picture of one of tho

Roadsters were built long before Finite Element Analysis were done, so I suspect there is little rigidity lost with the removal the trunk wall. Body just "sits" on the frame. I suspect a well design
