The head's off but the #1 head bolt broke off about 1/2" above the block. Need advice on removing without damaging the block and preferrably without towing it to a machine shop or pulling the engine.

I have used a stud puller to get recalcitrant studs/bolts out and it works well. I have several different types and all seem to work well. Put a piece of cardboard over the bolt so you don't scratch

You're lucky it broke off ABOVE the block surface and not below it. If you have enough "grab area" I'd put down a large washer over the broken headbolt (to protect accidently gouging the block) and

In my limited experience under the hood, be careful using the easyouts and go slow. I have seen (didn't do it) the results of someone using progressively larger easyouts to try and remove a headbolt

I have a 1600 block that the bolt broke off even with the surface of the block. I drilled it, used an easy-out, and the easy-out snapped off level with the top of the block also. where do I go now? C

I was just reading online about easy-out and the general impression I get is that they break off easily and machine shops hate you for getting them stuck in there once you bring the block to them. I

Don't bother heating the block as it has too much mass. Heat the bolt instead with a lot of propane or mapp gas or better yet oxy-acetylene. My stud puller did a great job in removing stuck studs but

A broken EZ-out can be removed by means of an acetylene torch. You have to have a small tip on the torch, know what you are doing and be very careful, but it works. I have seen a "maestro" do this: f
