the fuse you describe sounds like a radio fuse. how about the dash light switch under the edge of the dash to the left of the steering wheel? chuck. dash lights are a red wire with a white tracer....

typical in-line fuse - maybe the non-standard PO fitted, in-line fuse connector sprung open?
