- Gas starvation... The partially full filter is a sure sign. Look for blockage where the fuel line joins the cross pipe. In my Alpines its always been black slivers of the orginal tank inside coating.

- Well, my first thought is water in the gas. Was this a busy service station where you fueld up or an off the beaten path place. In any case check the fuel. Take the top off the carb and clean it out.

- If it is a 289, did you check to see if the #7 & #8 plug wires are making contact? They have a tendency to arc across each other and I think that might cause the motor to seem like it's running on 6
