Maybe bolt the starter to the motor plate and see if it'll spin before you put it back in? If Frank can run the motor on the floor, you can probably turn it over with the starter, eh?

This is the reason one could use an A series stand, specifically for starting an engine on. Much easier to sort out that way. I got the cooling system installed, the last fuel line needs to be hooked

Unfortunately my engine stand won't allow a flywheel to be mounted - not enough clearance. I guess I'll hang it off the picker, mount the starter and flywheel and give it a whirl... Joe Lansing Ever

Set it on the floor and start it. Keep one hand on the valve cover, it won't move much just keep your hand on it so the torque doesn't tip it sideways. I do it all the time. -- Frank Clarici Toms Riv

55 ft-lbs should be in the right ballpark. Since there is a considerable reduction between the starter itself and the engine, the starter doesn't need to apply much torque to turn the engine. My DeWa
