I plan on replacing the tank on my 68 BGT shortly. The top of the old (original) tank has rusted, so there is no saving it. With the tank out, I will wire brush the entire area under the wheel well,

I used two coast of Hammerite smooth gloss, then copious Waxoyl on top. Still gets a little chipped on the front corners from stones spat out by the rear tyres, so additional Finnigans underbody seal

If you're starting with a new tank, would it be a good idea to powdercoat it in black? I realize that you wouldnt want to powder coat a used tank, no matter how clean you think it is. Boom. _________

When I replaced the tank on my 1980 MGB, I sprayed the top (and bottom) with a black rubber undercoating. I think the right method would have been to strip the tank to bare metal and use the zinc coa

Bingo, I think Paul is correct. That "primer" you see on new body panels (and I presume gas tanks) is not a primer but just a coating to keep it sound until the final user gets the product. Larry Hoy
