I had been having some pinging lately on my '71 MGB. A quick check of the static timing showed 7 deg BTDC which is retarded compared to the book spec of 10 deg (for the 18GK engine). I tried several

Well, if you have the same dynamic timing but a different static timing then something is "different" in your set up. Obviously the dynamic setting is what matters, but it all should be the same. For

Had exactly this on my roadster - had to set 7 degrees static and it still pinked on hills when hot. The thick advance spring had stretched to the point that it wasn't effective at all. PaulH.

That's a pretty strong overgeneralization. Note that where the manufacturer suggests might not be the most optimal for your situation, but that is true for both static and dynamic timing. If you set
