That's the ballast. The top wire, I believe should just go to the coil. So, you can just pull the bottom one and put it on the coil. But then you need a different coil. You did get a non-ballasted co

The loom ballast is bypassed on all rubber bumper cars during cranking, the additional resistor for the 45DE4 system isn't. The three wires to the distributor are from the coil -ve (as you say) which
