My '65 had no shims on dis-assembly either. Which really means nothing in the grand scheme of things, does it? The exploded diagram in Haynes shows a piece called a 'seating' which looks like a shim.

back the conundrum is is Does the drive seat correctly all the way to the bottom of the hole that it is meant to seat in? Is there any crap stuck behind it? Bent shaft? Bearing plate on the camshaft
