I've tried the stuff, in fact, I still have several rods of it because it really didn't do much of a job. The only thing I got good results with it was filling some small holes in an intake, purely

I tried that type of "aluminum welding rod" a number of years ago. It's actually an aluminum solder that's sold under a number of different names. I think the main constituent of the alloy is zinc.
