Andrew, it doesn't sound good at all. Most likely a rod or bearing, but you probably won't be able to tell for sure until you drop the oil pan. You have my condolences for the dearly departed. Ken Wa

You probably should have switched off immediately, but the major damage had already been done. Main or rod bearing failure would cause the symptoms you mention -- an actual broken rod would have been
