Take a look at the parts you have in the OD now and compare to the illustration in the workshop manual. The manual is printed so that for me, right handed, it's disorienting as I slide under the car

Thanks for the reply. So far all I have removed is the solenoid. I think that action of the solenoid at all means it's probably okay. I will have to order new o-rings for the solenoid, and a new bal

There is still a piece in the OD which when removed will bring the ball out with it. It is the same outside diameter as the solenoid coil. Once you get it out you will see it fits inside the metal c

The piston *centralises* in the solenoid when power is applied, so it all depends on whether the piston is pushed in past the centre or pulled out past it. There is no return spring inside the soleno

There are actually two balls in the OD. If you have the Bentley manual, illustration Fc2, one of them is #59, "valve ball", that fits against the solenoid, and another is #35, "valve ball", that fit
