- Trefor sounds very Welsh, in which case you have the same problem as In my '67 B I am using the Castrol Valvemaster ( from MGOC or Halfords) to dope each 25 litre fill of Super Unleaded ( 98 Octane),

- Hi Colin, What gets me about your commentary on octane rating is that I'm running my '69 B (with a c: '67 head) on 87 octane unleaded and have no pinking with the timing set at stock specs. I'd be ru

- Umm, I think the US figures octane differently than the rest of the world, and that you need to add something like 5 to the US number to get its European equivalent. So US 87 equals British 92, or so

- Hi, Colin, I, too, did some research on this... LRP in the UK has no British Standard and uses potassium which, apparently, didn't fare too well as lead replacement compound in the (unofficial) tests

- The point about Valvemaster Plus is that it is supposed to raise the octane of standard unleaded to what 4-star leaded was, i.e. no retardation required. No ideal how the price compares. PaulH. Trefo

- Exactly my point Paul, but I do not see how one small addition can bring a tankfull back to 4* leaded quality ( I always thought that this had been standardised at 98 Octane) . Castrol even wrote me

- As a good point of reference there is a very good website by a Brit, now living in the USA which deals with "Living with Unleaded" as well as fantastic electrical tips for our MG's. The site is locat

- Another thing to consider is altitude. Here in Colorado (~5000 feet), for instance, all the pumps start at 85 octane. In West Texas (~2000 feet) you can't find anything less than 87. I'm not certain,

- Interesting stuff. I DID notice that the octane rating of the reg unleaded was lower on the northeast coast than it is here in so-central TX last year. Next time I'm thru El Paso (W. TX, ~1900') I'l
