I would check the > lock out switch, instead of the pressure relief assembly. Bob was correct in his description of the pump. It does have to go in only one way. You can buy a pressure tester. See a

Could that friction material you mentioned be the magnet material in place on the cover of the sump in order to catch and retain ant metal filings or bits during normal operation. Also, I need more
