Depends on your intent. If it is to maintain the back of the plate ORIGINAL, then primer and paint are out. The only thin you can look for is some sort of clear protectant. The simplest is a coating

That's it exactly. I know it's for wood, but you're looking to put a film on something that would show any scuffing to accept regular automotive clear. Also the automotive clear will crack just like

Rustoleum has a clear product that should help. That would be good for the front. You could use it on the back, as well. Then, of course, there's POR15 and XORust paint. You can find XO paint at TruV
