I had the same problem. I broke an axle. I put in a MGB rear differential unit and axles into my MGA housing, something I wanted to do anyway for the different ratio. I donated my remaining good axle

Seems likely that an axle shaft broke. It'd be like trying to drive with one wheel on ice. Why not find a used rear end and swap either the one axle or the whole rear end? Wire wheel and disc wheel a

A half shaft swap on its own is easy enough - but with a broken axle surely the broken stub needs to be removed, any swarf inside the diff/housing needs cleaning, which at least involves draining the
