I didn't notice the year of your MG, but do suggest that if you have smog equipment (i.e..: the air pump and gulp valve, etc.) you consider disconnecting or removing same; a bad gulp valve can cause

Most likely the problem is related to the advent of really cold weather. The car is running too lean. Have you checked that there is still oil in the dashpot? Have you tried richening up the mixture?

Correct level of dash pot oil seems to help with mine, but if it is backfiring as bad as it sounds I doubt that is your problem, I would look at the valves. Make sure they are adjusted correctly, if

When mine did this it was fouled plugs and a dirty air cleaner. The former caused by the latter.

I know you have given us an update but backfiring at higher rpm and throttle openings on my V8 was caused by too big a points gap. PaulH.
