I started this exchange, questioning the worth of using a magnetic sump plug. Apart from suggesting that a magnet "in the oil stream" at or near the filter might be more effective, I also questioned

Here is the ultimate on this thread. Get a cheap compass, stick it on your dash, aim the car towards magnetic north, eventually you will get to that big magnetic rock, once the cdar sticks to the roc
