With spridgets, you can do a couple of things to a) allow wider rims and tyres b) prevent rubbing (usually (always?) in conjunction with 1) First thing to try is to fold the horizontal tab back up in

Yes, the axle housing, the half shafts and (obviously) the hubs are different. The wire wheel half shafts are somewhere around 1/2 longer than the steel wheel half shafts. I checked a few catalogues
