Got a 72 1275 that starts and runs great, gets away nicely, cruises smoothly at speed, and smooth around town. But sometimes, when I really get on it, up about 4k, she'll miss a bit. At the same time

Pulled the plugs. Plugs 1, 2, 3 are clean, light gray-brown, no ash, dry, like they are running lean-ish. But OK. Plug 4 has some heavy-ish black, dry soot like it's running rich. What the %&$# -- ov

No, more likely bad connection or mechanical problem with dizzy. Look for loose, frayed, shorted, etc., wiring on the primary side, e.g. coil "-" to dizzy and points.

3 plugs seem OK, #4 is oily. Try swapping #4 with one of the good ones and see what happens in awhile. If the new plug now in #4 gets oily and the swapped plug starts to clean up, I'd be suspicious o
