You must have a short in the switch itself, it must be grounding out through the cable as you suspect. Bad repro switch, perhaps? Try another switch and see what happens, just wear your oven mitts.

I have seen it both ways. On my 67 it was on the engine, I went to put it on the slave but the hole in the ground strap was too small. I didn't feel like drilling it out to fit the slave. On my Bugey

The correct strap has the 3/8 hole for all sprites and midgets up to the 1500 model and goes on the slave to the frame. The 1500 had the strap on the front of the motor. As long as you ground it good
