Hi Kristi, I don't think that the cable will stick and the wiper motor still work, if they are connected. More likely the the two half's of the wiper mechanism is loose and the cable is not engaging.

I had the same problem with my 76. I replaced the switch with new. Developed the same problem within 2 weeks. Upon investigation I found that the little screw that holds the plastic switch in place
