It sounds to me like fuel starvation caused by a too-shallow reservoir. During hard braking, the fuel is rushing towards the front of the bowls and uncovering the fuel pickup orifice. My best guess

Could be a vacuum leak in the servo, if it has one, causing a weak mixture and the stall. However a loose connection in the igntion circuit would cause the tach (if electric) to drop to zero instanly
