while the stock 1098 is certainly a vast improvement in terms of performance from either config. of the original 948, it cannot match the significant upper mid-range punch of the stock 1275, though

I run a 1275 with a 5 speed and a 4.22 diff. 80 all day is not a problem at 4500 rpm. To get to any events, I have to drive 3 hours one way (or more) So it's highways at speed for hours. I can't imag

My rather stock 1275 with 5speed and 3.9 diff is just fine off the line. Wheel spin is a problem, but I think that is more of a driver issue. Frank, is your 1275 modified such that you don't have any

That's why I have the 4.2, 2nd-3rd was too far. The engine is modified with plaenty of low end torque. As it is with the 4.2, it's almost exactly as a stock Sprite 4 speed but I now have 5th. -- Fran

As far as fuel economy goes, a stock 1275 can do quite well. I actually checked the mileage on my 67 (many years ago). On a long highway trip I found that at 3500 rpm it got 36 mpg. At 4K, it got 38
