'Gage' may well be acceptable in America, but it can hardly claim to be the only correct spelling. The number of references to 'gauge' in the link given far outweigh the number of references to 'gage

No, "gage" isn't generally acceptable for "gauge" in America either. What I meant was that was the way I *wish* it was spelled. Phonetically easier: "g" + "age" = "gage" like on Sesame Street ;-). So
