I have rebuilt a number of J types used in racing and have not had any leak to date. I use a Permatex/Loctite product on the gaskets and all mating faces. Here in AUS it is marketed as Loctite Blue

The best gasket compound I have ever found for surfaces in decent shape is Yamabond. Use #4 for rougher parts and #5 for ones in excellent shape. You can get it at any Yamaha motorcycle shop. I also
