Question: Why do the low compression (I think 9 to 1) NASCAR motors run hotter combustion temps then the 12 to 1 motors? Believe the fuel is different too as the low compression motors may have to ru

John - Could be with less compression and spark lead combustion is slower and the exhaust is hotter which heats the exhaust jackets more .

Is it possible to use too high an octane rating, My understanding is that the higher the rating the slower the rate of burn. So logically one would want only enough octane to cover detonation- Is thi

Actually it is not even close.. most modern fuels burn at relatively the same speed. It is all in the chemistry as to how they resist detonation and octane number is only part of the issue. The best

The short answer...YES. This is probably one of the average driver's most misunderstood facts about fuel today. (We in the performance arena have a little better handle on it) Oil companies heavily

The higher the octane of gasoline the lower the BTUs. Higher octane means lower heat energy, therefore lower expansion of gases to push the piston down to create power and torque.

I was taught that the hottest mixture is about 10% on the rich side. Lean mixtures burn pistons because the heat is applied to the piston for a longer period of time, a slower burn. I'm not saying th
