Gear driven pumps tend to have less friction. Having too much friction can give the gears up on the cam too much wear. Some experiments, maybe 15-20 years ago, put sprite internal parts into oil pump

The Gear driven pumps were put in later 3000s by BMC because they are cheaper to make. The rotary vane pumps are better and tend to pump more oil more consistently over the entire RPM range, althoug
