You don't have to pull the pump. You just have to pull the distributor (and it's tower), remove the drive gear, and spin the oil pump with an electric drill. Cut off a large, cheap, flat-bladed screw

You can use a spring compression gage to "guess" the increase in by-pass pressure, but be careful about restricting the flow of oil out the by-pass because the "valve" can not move enought. ( better
