The switch on top of the gearbox on the left side only allows the overdrive to engage when you are in 4th (or 3rd on some models). I believe when you are in 4th, the switch is closed, mechanically. I

1. Unlikely that it is the switch but check it to rule this out. To check the switch, engage the overdrive switch while the ignition is turned on. Under the hood to the upper left side of the engine

Make sure you check the solenoid before deciding it's the pump. The solenoid can be accessed from the outside of the tranny (engine and tranny in place) whereas the pump cannot. Take the square cover
