I would recomend removing the primer if for no other reason that you metal etch primer adhears well. I have found that Easy Off oven cleaner works great for removing paint in the engine bay. Duram Sa

Wayne, I don't know if you do need to remove it or not, but be verrry careful if you do. Lead poisoning is bad stuff. I spent a week in a VA hospital with it. You don't want you or anyone else breath

You're right that it might hold the remover and you have to be very, very careful to get all the stripper off of everything or your paint will bubble off later. The same is true when you get your car
