The steering column pieces may have a high concentration of oils from the Bakelite. I repainted mine and the technique was really basic. Cleaned well with Sikkens M600 degreaser then I scotchbrited

Thanks, this was what I was looking for. I suspected something in the Bakelite was causing the problem. Still amazes me that the issue continues to exist 40 years after the part was made. Cheers, JV
