Does the car roll in neutral? If a clutch sits for a while it can bind itself to the flywheel but I doubt that this is your problem. THere are several ways to free it if this were the case. You might

If you set up the clutch and pressure plate w/ an alignment tool, of some sort, the engine and transmission should fall together. I've never had to clamp stuff together- an occasional tap w/ a rubber

Hi Tom, Starting the car in gear sounds more dramatic than it really is. As you observed, do it away from the house, but you can expect to have it start, then stall quickly when you push in the choke
