Do you have a meter of some type that is polarity sensitive? If the car was originally positive ground, this probably means that it has a generator rather than an alternator. Guessing that it hasn't

You should also be aware that the + and - battery posts are different sizes, hence the clamps are different sizes, therefore you will have a difficult time hooking up the battery backwards. Unless so

It should, but you can check by looking up the numbers on the alt. and starter. If the starter was converted the converter usually marks it on the outside. I don't know if an alt can be converted but
