I'm a proud new owner of an 80 Spitfire (last Friday) with over 200K The previous owner was using the same oil in the transmission (4 Speed with Overdrive) that he used in the engine (Castrol 20W50).

Yep your gear box will need an oil chainge every 3000 miles if less. Engin oil is not designed for use in a gearbox. The 90W oil is ideal for the Spitfire. It needs the high sulpher content to stop t

Before Ed Hamilton (and others) jump in here, I'll tell you the findings: modern 90W gearbox oil is TOO SLIPPERY for the Spit overdrive box. If you put it in you will feel it slipping in Direct Drive

So can you drive off from standstill with your OD engadged? I would check your inhibitor switch:-) I suspect you can get a proper modern gear oil designed to run in 'A' and 'J' type over drives. Try
