Thanks to all who responded to rear axle nut size....drove a 1 7/8" socket over the "knurled" nut and off like magic. Had to rent a puller to get the hub off, but with the right tool that worked too.

I forget what precipitated this repair, but a few things. It is OK to use a sealant on the outer diameter of the seal, try to remove any high spots on the hub and use an adhesive sealant... Permatex

The oil sloshes down the axle tube, hits the axle end cap, then lubricates the bearing. The seal then stops the lube from reaching the backing plate and brake surfaces. WST -- Original Message -- Fr

In my experience, the gaskets are frequenty well oil penetrated and can often be separated from the surface it's stuck on by gingerly inserting a razor blade and lifting the gaket away from the metal
