Dick the 10 bolt is actually a Very Low Drag rear end... it's a good call Hp wise... not many folks run them cause of the hassle changing gears... But if your sure you have the ratio you want.... why

Leave the pinion alone, shim the ring a little closer to the pinion. Got a dial indicator? I believe you want about .008" backlash.

Did you check the backlash? new GM gears should run at about 0.008 inch if it`s a used gear you can go up to 0.012 inch If the gear hasn`t been removed or changed but the carrier has been chnage then
